greeninitiative_logo1The Buffalo Green Hospitality Initiative is launching several programs in preparation for the American Solar Energy Society National Solar Conference on May 5-18.

Formed in August 2007, the goal of the initiative is to develop and maintain environmentally responsible practices and promote a green experience for travelers and conventions.

The CVB is helping to lead this effort and in doing so, has already attracted new events to our community such as this upcoming conference and 2010’s North American Association for Environmental Education Conference.

Beginning in May 2009, the Buffalo Niagara CVB and the Buffalo Green Hospitality Initiative will be launching three major programs. They are:

  1. Food Composting – During the events at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center and at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, the food will be composted for the first time.
  2. Leafing a Legacy – As a local carbon offset, trees will be planted based on 88 hours of electricity used at the Convention Center.
  3. Buffalo Blue Bikes – Bicycles will be made available for convention delegates to borrow during the convention allowing visitors to get to downtown attractions using pedal power.

We all know that going “GREEN” is not just a fad, but a smart business decision. To the CVB, going “GREEN” not only saves our Earth’s valuable resources, but is a major component in attracting conventions, meetings and individual tourists to the financial benefit of our area.
